I have a customer who is running a single Win2000 server SP4 in a domain environment. It is also running Exchange 5.5 SP4. They have a DSL connection and have a registered Domain Name. Their IP address on their firewall is dynamic, but with DNS2GO there is no problem finding their web site on the internet. Problem, their Exchange 5.5 was recently loaded and correctly configured. It was working perfectly, with both internal and external mail. Recently, we did a reboot of the server and learned that the Exchange IMS service did not start. It will start manually, however upon any reboot, it fails to start automatically. In the event log are two events 4018 - 4116. I have researched these extensively and came up with these KB articles. 157042 (private store exists), 163243 (no registry errors), 186739 (permissions ok), 192540 (IMS can be started manually), 262939 (was not demoted), 316616 (Can restart manually, also no bad messages in IMS found), 325046 (correct version). I am stumped. I also found another event in the application log. Source = MSExchangeIS Private Category = Logons Event ID = 1023 Description= DOMAIN\administrator was validated as /o=<organization>/ou=DOMAIN/cn=Configuration/cn=Connections/cn=Internet Mail Connector (SERVER) but was unable to log on to /o=<Organization>/ou=DOMAIN/cn=Configuration/cn=Connections/cn=Internet Mail Connector (SERVER).
This does not make sense. If he is validated, why can he not logon? A manual start of the service with his credentials will work. The domain administrator has full privledges in all containers of the Exchange Admin.
Does anyone have any idea on this issue? I have been working this problem and 'my head hurts' <<grin>>. Any help would be appreciated.

In addition, I have removed the IMS connector, rebooted, and re-installed. I got the same problem, the service will not do an automatic start, only a manual.
I don't remember exactly where in Exchange 5.5 this is done (I stopped using 5.5 around 3 years ago), but I believe the following is your problem. Exchange is setup to use an account to start the IMS that it's password doesn't match the current password (perhaps because it was changed). Update the account (SA) with a valid username and password.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
