Exchange 5.5 sever

By jcbrito_77 ·
Will I come across a problem if I load the same Exchange 5.5 sever software on two systems on my network? The reason I will be doing this is because I?m in the process of doing a hardware upgrade on my Exchange server.

I don't know if you are restoring from a tape backup or re-installing from scratch. Either way, as long as you shut down the Exchange services on the first server, you should have no problems using another machine. If however, you want to MIGRATE the mailboxes/etc over to the temporary server, then, as far as I can recall, you must give the new server another name. That's why I recommend using a full tape restore of the server onto the other machine - this will allow you to shut down the other one first.

I hope this helps.

I joined a second sever to our exchance site. The next day or some time that day the Internet Mail Service stoped. I though it was because I used the same exchage software that was used on the first exchange sever.

The best way to do this is to install Exchange on the second server and join the same site as the first server. Then, you can move any or all of the mailboxes to the second server directly (within Exchange 5.5, as long as SP3 is installed, you can use the Move Mailbox feature), and replicate any public folders. Once you have your mailboxes and public folders running on the new server, if you want to completely remove the old server from the Exchange organization, you can do so. However, if it was the first (or only) server in the Exchange site, there are additional things you need to do before that happens. There's a MS knowledgebase article on this - here's a link to it:

(remember to remove any spaces in the url)

Hope this helps!

Form the answer I've got I?m assuming the there wouldn't be a problem loading the same software on two machines and that the reason the Internet Mail Service turned of is because of other reasons, is this correct?

Responding to your comment: This would have nothing to do with it, unless you also tried to install the IMS on the second server without removing it from the first server, or if you have a firewall or proxy server. You cannot have two instances of the IMS running at the same time in the same site. You will need to move the IMS to the second server, anyway, if you are going to take the first server offline completely. I've done this several times without incident. NOTE - before removing the IMS from the first server, carefully document all your IMS settings so that you can duplicate them on the second server. Then, during a convenient time when you can take the IMS off-line (not Exchange completely but just the IMS), you can simply delete the IMS on the first server and install a new one on the second server. Then configure the new one the same as the original one. If you have a firewall or proxy server and/or are using NAT, you might have to change some proxy or firewall settingsto have the email forwarded to the correct internal IP address. If this is not done, your IMS might not start or run properly because it cannot communicate with the outside world. If you have any problems, let me know. Hope this helps!
