Exchange 5.5 sp4

By hipath ·
We have Exchange 5.5 sp4. This has happened twice: we can send external email out but never get external email back. I have looked at the app log and did not see an error. This is not a MX record, IP, NIC, Domain, drive space, etc.,.... I do not not know what futher to test and t/s. Internal resolves AoK. ?????

Can you provide more details as to what you mean by getting external email back? Do you mean you've sent mail to your Exchange mailbox from an external account and not received it? Do you have a firewall set up that might be blocking some domains, or are the emails being sent from a blacklisted domain?

External meaning send an email from domain_x.com to domain_y.com.That works. Domain_y.com sends a reply, the user never receives. Factly, there is no email what so ever in the Exchange queue.
No firewall, no blacklisting, no spam filtering, just an Exchange
problem.

If your server has been ever acted as a relay, and has been blaclisted, and the other domain does use blacklist you wont be receiving emails.

if you can to and from hotmail, the problem lies at the other domain in how what their setup is. and they should get an error message back, mail does not just disappear. Ask them to fax that error message to you and work from there.

As I stated b4, this is not blacklisting or relaying or aby of the other items stated above. There are no errors, no NDRs, email flows out but zero in. The Exchange queue inbound is empty. I sent a 49mb email this am: no errors, no NDRs, no bounce, no returns. I am able to see both servers for that test. It was sent and never received, no errors generated. Thanks

what abound the outbound queue .
did you check the mdbdata folders
or the space left on the harddisk itself

I encountered this three times too, once due a spam filter server (1 hardware , 1 software) and one due the (nav) antivirus for exchange.

reboot the server and check all logs.

I posted my question here because we have already done all the normal t/s but thanks anyway for the reminder. Since the email was flowing out but not in and I couldn't come up with the exact cause because there are no errors, we'll upgrade the platform.
Thanks again.
