Exchange 5.5 User e-mail problems

By rdowd ·
I currently am running Exchange Server 5.5), and some of our user can not access their e-mail remotely. Althought it is only a hand full of staff who are experiencing this problem, it is too many in my opinion.

I don't know where the problem lies, however; it is very frustrating to try and fix this ongoing problem.

Here is what I am running in our domain.
1 NT4.0 PDC, 1 NT4.0 BDC & 1 NT4.0 Exchange Server.

Can anyone help me out with this problem? Perhaps someone else out there is having the same problems as I am. I appreciate all the help.

Thank You,
Bob

Will need more info to come to a definite conclusion of the problem. Off the cuff I can say your problem could be any one of the following:
1. Firewall issues (if you have one)
2. Authentication (more likely)
3. Connectivity (also very likely)
If you could provide error messages or event log entires they could point us in the right direction

Still trying to figure this problem out. I checked the (3) recommendations, however nothing listed fixes or resolves the problems

Still need more information.

How are the remote users connecting? Is the problem specific to certain users or to certain remote machines? Do all users have dial-in permission set? Do you have a RAS server setup? Can they connect to that? Are they connecting to the network but not able to find the exchange server? (If so, consider adding a host file on the remote machines pointing to the exchange box.)

A little more information would help!

When you say some users cannot access their email remotly what do you mean? Are they able to log in and just cannot load the page? Can tehy get to the login page at all? Are tehy being rejected at the login screen?

Provide a little detail for greater assistance.

I will assume that you are not using Outlook Web Access. And that the computers can access the eMail server when they are on the network.
When the user connects confirm that they can ping the mail server by IP address. Then by name (confirm DNS). If both are getting replies. Increase the time out from 30 to 60 seconds and see what happens. If they can't resolve the DNS, you can add a hosts file or try to fix that problem. You can't add the IP address for the mail server to the Outlook profile, as when it connects it changes the IP to the server name.
