Exchange Authentication Problem w/POP3

by jrconsult . Updated 25 years, 5 months ago

Have a client with Exchange that has POP enabled for all users. NT user
accounts are their first name and Exchange alias is first initial/last name.
For example:

“John” is NT username for John Smith
“jsmith” is alias for Exchange

When trying to retrieve mail from jsmith account using POP client, Exchange
will return an access denied error. It recognizes the alias jsmith, but
will not accept the password. Password being used is the same as the
password assigned to the NT user John. Outlook has no problem pulling mail
from this account. POP is enabled for all users. SMTP works fine.

If I create an NT user, testmail, and the Exchange alias is also testmail,
the POP client can retrieve from the account with no problem.
What gives with this? Shouldn’t Exchange know that John and jsmith are the
same, considering it automatically creates the alias?
