Is there a way for me to set up an Auto response in a mailbox on the Exchange Server itself instead of using Outlooks Rules Wizard? If so, how can this be done?

Thanks

I believe the resolution listed below can only be setup if the client is running Outlook 2000 and Exchange 5.5. But I thought it might be useful.....

You can use the Rules Wizard to automatically send reply messages to certain people even when you're not running Microsoft Outlook?. So, when your computer is turned off, you can still send custom replies to messages from certain people.

Create a rule to have Exchange Server send an automatic reply:

1. On the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard, and then click the New button.

2. In the Which type of rule do you want to create list, click Check messages when they arrive, and then click the Next button.

3. In the Which condition(s) do you want to check list, select the From peopleor distribution list check box.

4. In the Rule description list, click the underlined phrase, people or distribution list, and in the Type name or select from list box, type the name of each person you want to receive the custom reply, and clickthe From button after you type each name.

5. Click the OK button, and then click the Next button.

6. In the What do you want to do with the message list, select the Have server reply using a specific message check box.

7. In the Rule description list, click the underlined phrase, a specific message, and then in the subject line and message body, type whatever information you'd like to appear in your custom reply.

8. Click the Close button, and when prompted to save changes, click Yes.

9. Click the Finish button, and then click the OK button.

That's it. Now, when you receive a message from one of the people you specified in step 4, they'll automatically receive your custom response.

I know of this method already, but I am looking for a solution that works on the server side only without having to use Outlook. The mailbox in question is a community box of sorts and goes to numerous people. I would like to this on the server sidewithout setting up a client.

Thanks

Hunter, check this as I managed to create an Exchange Rule to auto reply at work today.

You have to use the Outlook 98 and the Out of Office Assistant to log into the mailbox once and apply the "I am currently Out of the Office".

Once this is checked (and the message blank), Add a Rule using the bottom tab, and select the name of the mailbox in the "Sent To" box (don't apply a from name). Then check the "Reply With" box and click the "Template" tab.

In the Template mail message, typethe appropriate Subject and Message body, but do not enter a "To" or "CC" name. Save the message and close the box.

Click Ok to save the rule and then Ok to save the Out of Office. Then I suggest that you close outlook and test sending to the mailbox. If you see two messages, you may need to play with these configurations (they are touchy) to get it working.

Watch out in the future if you open the mailbox later as the Out of office message pops up (don't turn it off)!
Good Luck.
