Exchange backup error

by suzanne . Updated 23 years, 8 months ago

I am running Exchange 5.5 on an NT 4 server, using ArcservIT 6.61 for backups. All have the latest service packs installed.
When I did the latest service pack install it wouldn’t replace the file “emsui32.dll” because it was in use. I stopped all services I could see that might impact on this file to no avail. I can find no hint on Microsoft as to what this file is for, but Exchange still runs ok.
However, when I do a backup of the Exchange Brick level it stops at about 20% into the database with no obvious error message at that point. For a varying number of mailboxes beforehand I get the following error:
“Failed to read from database DBNAM = \individual Mailboxes\username\foldername, EC = EXCH Exchange Agent — (402) “Exchange system error”.” Not all malboxes get the error, just some.
The backup doesn’t stop on the same mailbox each time, but at the same percentage point into the database.
I have looked on the Microsoft Support site and found no entries with this error (surprise, surprise!).
I have run eseutil and checked the integrity of the database, and done an offline defragment. No errors were found.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing my problems?

Many thanks in anticipation.
