Exchange Configuration ?

By d_yawger ·
Our owners is requesting that I set up our email addresses (in Exchange 5.5) to be:

name.department@domain.com

(noting that several people belong to multiple departments)

He wants everyone in the department level to be able to receive all department emails. His reasoning is that it looks more personal and that it includes the group (accountability). He also believes that the name and department gives our company the outward appearance of size.

I know how to set up 'basic' distribution lists, but in doing so usually just set up:

department@domain.com
and/or
name@domain.com

with each person being assigned to groups, and then getting that groups mail.

I am hoping to do this in the cleanest possible way and am stumped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

That's an intriguing request. I'm not sure it's the best or cleanest answer, but I think I would first set up a mailbox for each department (finance@domain.com, payables@domain.com, etc).

Then I would set up the user mailboxes (paul.finance@domain.com, etc.) and attach the department mailbox to that mailbox as an alternate recipient.

An inbound message to paul.finance@domain.com would then be delivered to both my mailbox and the department mailbox.

On the desktop, Outlook could be set up to open both the personal and the group mailbox.

I'll look forward to reading other ideas because there are undoubtedly other ways to accomplish a similar outcome.

regards!

paul

Very interesting question I'll give u that!! Obviously u wud need to create every users mailbox as requested (yawger.itdept@domain.com). Now the other thing wud be to have distribution lists for the depts. Then associate the mailboxes with the DL's.
I'm not sure if this is the best way or not ...wot do u guys out there think?
