Exchange DNS Questin

By mrochr ·
The scene: My DNS Server is UNIX based and does not allow _ . My exchange server 5.5 is named ###_#####. The question I propose is: Can I just rename the host name to allow my server to use the Internet Mail Connector without having an impact on any other resources.

Thanks
Rick

Yes. Windows names and DNS names could be different (it's not advisable). Usually when the DNS is UNIX I used the IP number for the Internet MAil connector.

I wouldn't change the hostname at all. Just set your DNS MX record to point to an alias for ###_#####. For example, if the Exchange machine is ACME_MAIL and its IP Address is 10.17.241.129 then create a host record in DNS like: ACMEMAIL 10.17.241.129

There is no need to actually set (or change) the hostname on ACME_MAIL. It's one of those, "...and you're the only one that has to know." things.
