Exchange Internet Email problem

I'm running Exchange 5.5 SP3 on an NT 4.0 SP6a server. I'm having problems with the Internet Mail connector "breaking" overnight. I'm wondering if it is backup-related: we use Veritas' Backup Exec (latest version) on the same server, which backs up to tape every night. When I come in to check in the morning, mail is often down. Simply stopping and restarting the internet mail service brings it back up. Anyone care to try answering this one?

This isn't an answer but a few things to check:

1) Do you have the add-on module for Backup Exec to backup Exchange? Is the backup job 100% successful?

2) Does the service account for the tape software have permisions in Exchange?

3) Does the backup job run during the scheduled Exchange maintanance period?

4) Does the Event log show any errors or cautions leading up to or following the backup? Toggle the maximum logging for the Exchange Mail connector and it might reveal more messages in the event log that point to the problem.

No solutions here, just a couple of thoughts...

Veritas Backup Exec (my personal favorite over ARCserve) has a designed limitation. It will not backup Exchange or SQL databases without an add-in module from Veritas. Do you have this add-in? I am not sure that this is your problem, but without the module operation will not be normal.

Have you suspended your backup for a night (possibly on a weekend with little traffic to change the data) to test or verify that the backup is effecting the mail connector?

Again not a definite answer but here's a few things you can try;

1 - check you do have the Exchange backup Module - i user arcserve and i had to purchase to Exchange server back up agent.

2 - also make sure in the Exchange backup agent the Exchange service account is used. also add the Exchange service account to the local admin group of the server and not just the domain.

3 - check the IMC serivce and make sure the exchange service account is listed to start the service.

4- check the backup logs, and if possible run a back when you are there to see at what point the IMC stops.

Hi;
Online Backup for Exchange (Whatever the S/W used) consumes double the memory of the normal operation.
If you do not have enuogh memory this may be the problem.
