Exchange - Internet Mail Service error

By todd ·
Every time I try to start the Internet Mail Service, I get an exception error. I believe this is being caused by a "bad" email. Does anyone know how to delete a "bad" email?

Any other suggestions on what may be causing this?
Exchange server 5.5 Service Pack 3 Build: 2650.24

Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately, it didn't help.
Apparently what had happened, was an X400 address for the administrator had somehow in-advertantly gotten deleted and was causing the trouble. GO FIGURE!!

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "bad" email? It leads me to think that perhaps your mail server is infected with some sort of virus. Have you scanned everything and made sure you have the latest virus definitions installed?

By bad email, I meant bad address, scrambled headers, or such.

What you can do is throwing away the internet mail service under connections. Stop the system attendant service, so all other exchange services stop. After they have stopped restart them. Then create a new internet mail service (by deleting this service starnge object are removed.)

If this is not yet the solution you may have a corrupted database.
You can take the exchange server offline and try to repair and check the database. Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 includes a utility called Eseutil, this utility can Defragmentate, Recover, Check Integrity, Upgrade, make a file Dump and Repair a corrupted database.

By repairing and defragmetation you can regain your speed. If the database is for example 2Gb in space you will need at least2GB free space for a repair and an defragmetation.

For more information about eseutil see technet article Q182903.

good luck.

Here's a TechNet article: Q168883 (go to microsoft.com and search for this Q number in the on-line TechNet knowledgebase if you don't have the CDs), describes how to get rid of a corrupted email message. If your event log error matches that shown in the article (Event ID 4037 and/or 1067), try this one. Hope this helps!

I am going to give you half the points, because your link DID give me the info on how to delete a "bad" email as I had requested, even though it didn't resolve my problem. THANKS!
