Exchange or Lotus Notes?

By darlenet ·
Has anyone done a comparison of email products or can anyone give specific reasons why we wouldn't want to move from Exchange 5.5 to Lotus Notes? I have never worked with Lotus Notes but I have worked with Exchange since 5.0 appeared.

Exchange or Lotus Notes?

On balance, Notes and Exchange are similar products and, personally, I wouldn't want to migrate unless it was to standardize across a larger organization or I needed the workflow functionality where Notes is somewhat stronger than Exchange.

On the other hand, if Instant Messaging or other real-time collaboration tools are becoming increasingly important, I would stay with Exchange but plan for an upgrade to Exchange2000.

Both Exchange and Notes are well-supported and are nowhere near the end of their product life. Both are scalable far beyond the needs of most organizations and both are stable, robust e-mail solutions.

So whether I was currently running Notes or Exchange, I wouldn't migrate to the other unless a new line of business required a functionality that only the other one had. Or if it was necessary to standardize across an organization.

If you want robust e-mail support, Exchange. If you want collaboration more, Notes. My personal preference, based strictly on end user experience is Exchange. It's a familiar interface to any previous MS user.
