Exchange Server 2000 potential spam relay?

I’m setting up an Exchange Server (in the testing stage now). I’ve set up Port Forwarding and the Recipient Policies etc and everything seemed ok so far until this point.

I had encountered a problem sending emails outside the organisation, so I checked the Queues. My heart nearly missed a beat as there where over 29,000+ emails “jammed” in a queue. I managed to delete them all, and I could then send email outside the organisation again.

I assume that Spammers had tried to use our Exchange server to send out spam, but because it’s not an open relay, the emails didn’t get sent – but how can I stop 29,000+ emails spam emails accumulating in the queue and jamming the exchange?

We’re running an SBS2000 Server with Exchange 2000 installed.
