Exchange Server 5.5, distribution lists.

By Kurt G ·
I have a WinNT 4.0 domain with a Exchange 5.5 box. I would like to use some distribution lists I've created, however, I am unable to share these lists with ALL recipients (Who use Outlook 9. Is there a way to create and share distribution lists,on the Exchange server, without allowing all recipients access? (I can't let everyone use the EXECUTIVE or CHANCELLOR list, as they will abuse it).

Thanks,
Kurt G.

Yes, there is. I don't have access to my system at the moment to confirm exactly where to find it in Exchange Administrator, but for each distribution list, there is a configuration area somewhere on the Properties page for access control and you can either make a list of the people or groups allowed to use it or a list or group of people not allowed to use it.

You can also, I believe, hide the distribution list from the address book so unless people know about it, they wouldn't be able to find it.

Go to File, New Distibution List to create.
Modify the members as you wish, then under Delivery Restrictions you can specify who can send to this list, either by specifying who to accept from, or who to reject messages from. You can also hide it from the address book, but if you are specifying who can use it, you shouldn't need to.

In Exchange Administrator, go to the Properties of the Executive Distribution List. Select the Delivery Restrictions tab. Under "Reject messages from", click List, and then Modify. Any Recipients and Distribution Lists you add will not be able to send messages to the Executive Distribution List.
