I have an Exchange 5.5 server that periodically will not send mail out of the office for two of our users (wouldn’t you know they are both the companies VP’s.) When they try to send mail they will occasionally receive a message from the Sys Admin saying “Your message did not reach all or some of the intended recipients, No transport provider was available” When looking at the event viewer I can see the following messages occurring.

(Occurred at time of message failure)
Anon-delivery report (reason code unable-to-transfer and diagnostic code unrecognised-OR-name) is being generated for message C=US;A= ;P=R SHANLY;L=LOGIC1-010221154057Z-54. It was originally destined for C=US;A= ;P=R SHANLY;O=MENDON;DDA:SMTP=Somebody(a)Someplace.com; (recipient number 1), and was to be redirected to . [MTA DISP:RESULT 14 136] (12)

Additional Messages that occurred in the event log that pertained to the exchange server but were as follows.

Error Message #1
Accept clients on external interface NNTP failed with error 0x80004005.
Error Message #2
Accept clients on NNTP interface failed in function HrRegisterProtocol with error 0x2740.
Here is how we have the mail system configured.
The exchange server is only used for inner office mail. The clients are using Outlook 98 that is configured for exchange server and an internet mail connection as well. The company uses a dial up connection to access email accounts that are hosted with a local ISP.
Since these messages are not destined for the office they shouldn’t even go through the exchange server so the problem may be more with Outlook then Exchange.
