exchange server 5.5--routing non-local m

By fred ·
hi,

We have Exchange Server 5.5 (small bus. server version). I send it an SMTP mail stream containing mail local to our domain, and also "external" mail. I'd like the local mail to be distributed to local users by Exchange Server (and it does this fine), and i'd like the external mail to be directly sent out to the internet (but it doesn't do this).

does anyone know how to configure this?

the frustrating thing is that i had this working properly, but 3 weeks ago exchange server crashed, and Microsoft had us reinstall it. Now, they can't figure out how to do it! but i know it can be done.

thanks for any help!

It sounds like the post-crash configuration didn't include the Internet Mail Service. So... you need to first install the Internet Mail Connector (or make sure it's installed).

Then, go into Exchange Administrator, under the server name, expand Configuration, highlight Connections then double-click on Internet Mail Service and choose the Connections tab. Make sure the Inbound/Outbound part is set correctly. If you're sending out just to the Internet (no SMTP server out there somewhere) check the box to use DNS and make sure the Exchange server knows where to find the DNS server.

If you are using an SMTP server, check the "forward to" box and enter the FQDN for the SMTP server.

You might then want to go to the Internet Mail tab and check the box to enable message tracking - at least until you're sure it's working properly.

That should give you a start... if more questions arise, please feel free to write.

The first answer looks good to me. If that doesn't work, try something else. Hope this helps.
