Install Internet Mail Connector and properly configure it. MS Knowledge Base has plenty of articles to assist.

the .com or .whatever is part of a SMTP address. The way to configure is to start the administrator and go to the configuration container and open Site Adressing properties and on the Site Addressing tab you can setup the X400 (internal addressing),SMTP, and you can also edit or remove CCMAIL and MS Postoffice addressing. I am assuming Exchange is a new addition to your system, If it is you need to do some serious reading up before playing with it. Exchange can be easily misconfigured when youare new to it (and when you are not) so it is really is a case of a little knowledge being dangerous.
