Exchange - Space for storing messages

By stargater ·
Operating system is Microsoft NT SBS. Microsoft Exchange 5.5. The hard disk that Exchange is stored on keeps getting full. Can I move all the messages to the client PCs (LAN) or move exchange to a new hard disk without having to reinstall NT. I have space in the server to add in a new hard disk.

The snswer is yes you can add additional storage space for for Echange Server by adding more physical storage space to the system. You can also move the public storage folder(s) to another server, add servers, configure mailbox storage limits and automatic deletion settings, or even have a Web storage system.

Your best bet is to leave the Exchange installation (application itself) on your original drive.
Move the the information stores (and probably the log files to the new drive.
Make sure you use the Exchange Performance Optimizer to change the location of these critical files. If you attempt to do so manually, chance are VERY good you will wreck your Exchange installation beyond repair.

As an alternative you have users store their saved emails in Personal Folder files created on their computers. It will free up rooom on the server. The downside is that you lose capabilities such as deleted message restoration, centralized backup, etc. Public folders however, can only reside on the Exchange server.
