Exchange: "undeliverable" messages

By hitchcock4 ·
In the last month or so, I have had more users show me messages that came back as "undeliverable". Yesterday and today, even more. And these are to people that we communicate with on a regular basis.

Here are 2 samples:

Sample 1)
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: test
Sent: 07/15/2004 9:02 AM
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
Dave Rinehart (Continental Aluminum) on 07/15/2004 9:02 AM
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<MEC6.MEC.DOM #5.5.0 smtp;550 Invalid domain metalexchangecorp.com>
-----------------------------
Sample 2)
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Sent: 07/15/2004 9:44 AM
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
dbasilio@asaalloys.com on 07/15/2004 9:49 AM
Your mail system could not find a way to successfully communicate with the destination system. Please notify your administrator.
<MEC6.MEC.DOM #5.5.1 smtp;551 5.5.1 We do not permit relaying here. Please contact bizsupport@allstream.net>

We are using Exchange 2000 on Win 2000 server. For a client, everyone uses Outlook 2002. MEC6 is the Exchange server.

Thanks a lot. Any ideas are welcome.

doesn't look like a problem on your end cept sample 2. Your mail header indicated to asaalloys.com exchange to relay that message to another recipient other than the one the mail was addressed to. no biggy there. sample 1 just says that metalexchangecorp.com is an invalid domain. could be their MX record isn't providing the right resolution. not your problem.

Whats the guys on the other end say?

ISP's are thightning the rules a bit I learned.
The do not accept all mail as they used to do
Probably because of all the E-mail worms &
virusses.
In your case they dont' look like they were sent
by a virus.
1)
A "dig -t mx metalexchangecorp.com" shows there
is a mx server for the domain. sprint might have
had problems at the time, did they pay their
bill?
2)
Appearantly allstream.net stopped transfering
messages to asaalloys.. it's their ISP so
probably they wanted to change something and it
didn't quite workout.

Both are problems with the other sites/ISP's

To both IT ADUDE and NICO:
metalexchangecorp.com is my domain. I have not used DIG before but I am experimenting now to understand what type of information that it returns.
... I think I need to call Sprint and ask them if there is a problem with our MX records. This is a partial list of our DNS entries with Sprint:
-----------------------
metalexchangecorp.com. IN A 65.163.165.129
metalexchangecorp.com. IN MX 10 mail.metalexchangecorp.com.
mail IN A 65.163.165.129
