Exchange2k and Exchange2k3

By SloTownRocks ·
Hello, and thank you all in advance for your words of wisdom!
I am trying to enable Instant Messaging through our Exchange server, however, we are running Exchange 2003, and I just found out the Ex2k3 does not support IM! Is it possible to install Exchange 2000 on our last remaining Windows 2000 Server and run IM from there? And if so, would I make the Ex2k server part of the domain and therefore part of the Ex2k3 environment, or would I have to make it completely seperate?
I hope this question makes sense.
Thank you

You can run an Exchange 2000 server in an Exchange 2K3 environment. However, I'm not entirely sure that you can install it after the fact. That is, if you have created your Exchange organization as strictly Exchange 2003, I'm not sure if it will let you install an Exchange 2000 server as part of the same organization. I do know that it works fine if you are upgrading from an existing Exchange 2000 organization to Exchange 2003. I would give it a try and see if it will allow you to install it - I certainly can't think of any reason that it would interfere or cause a problem with your existing organization if the installation fails. Just as long as you install it as part of the Win2K3 domain - that is, the Win2K server should be a member server on the same domain as the Exchange 2K3 organization. Also, and this may be obvious but I thought I should say it anyway, you DON'T want to run Exchange forestprep or adprep from the Exchange 2000 CD.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the respone synergy. Your words mirror my thoughts so I am greatful to get that confirmation! I just wish I had a test lab to test this in first! I dont suppose that it matters that my win2k server is a domain controller does it? You mentioned that it should be a member server. Thanks again for your response.
