ExMerge vs. Migrate.exe

By cgallagher ·
I'm getting ready to migate some mailboxes from one site to another and have been reading about both Exmerge and Migrate.exe. What is the difference between them? don't they both do the same thing? thanks, CG

I believe the Migrate.exe was around for Ex4 and 5. ExMerge has replaced that for Ex5.5 and Ex2K.

Migrate.exe is the executable for the Mailbox Migration utility. This can be used to move mailboxes from over server to another (within the same site) and is used on Exchange 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5. This is because the Distinguished Name (DN) is contains the Site name and is coded into the mailbox.

To move mailboxes to another server in a dif't site, ExMerge must be used, or the mailbox can be individually exported to PSTs using an Outlook client.

If the entire server is to be moved, then Move Server Wizard can be used, and then Move Mailbox can be used, but this becomes a long and arduous procedure.
