Expanding partition

By henkverbeek ·
Hello everybody,

I have a Windows NT 4.0 server with an hardware RAID solution. In this RAID configuration there are 3 9.1 GB drives. In Windows NT there are 2 partitions (1 system and 1 data). I want to add to disks to this RAID configuration. It is possible to expand the RAID volume. Can somebody tell me what I need to do to expand the data partition in windows nt. I don?t want to have extra drives.

Regards,

Henk Verbeek

Well like anything the answer is "it depends". What type of system do you have? I have successfully expanded the data partition on an IBM netfinity using IBM's RAID configurations software. I know Compaq and HP have similar software for their systems.

Basically I used the software to integrate new harddrives into the existing RAID configuration. Of course, make sure you have a good working backup and follow the instructions for your RAID software.

Hope this informations is helpful. Have anice 2001. Good luck and happy computing.

I?m using IBM hardware.
I know that it is possible to expand the RAID array on IBM hardware, but is it also possible to expand a partition on Windows NT 4.0 without formating that partition. In other words: I want to add the new diskcapacity to thecurrent data partition without backup and restore.

Before doing this I will first backup the complete server.

Henk

I agree with both answers. But if you do not have a smart controller as in the Compaq types, you can make a good backup of your non system partion which I assume is your data and program partion. Then just add the new drives and repartion it and reformat and then restore the data back to that partion. But make very sure you have a good backup. You should be able to do the partion enlargement from NT disk administrator.

Good Luck and Happy 2001
