Experience vs certification

by luredeflea . Updated 24 years, 5 months ago

I left my previous position to stay home with my new step-daughter, while she was in kindergarten. I have been trying to resume my career, but keep hitting the same brick wall. I have experience, knowledge and great problem solving skill but no certifications or formal education.

As a middle-aged woman, trying to start over in a field that is thick with young, eager, college or tech school graduates, I am more and more frustrated every day.

My finances are not in good enough shape to further my education at this time. I can’t even invest in new productivity software or study guides.

My previous position was ‘assistant imaging system administrator’ and that covers HPUX, NT, Oracle, FileNet, Panagon, SQL, Storage jukeboxes amoungothers. I would love to learn to write code, but I don’t know which language to specialize in. I have some Java and HTML experience, but not enough to administer or build corporate web pages.

Frankly, I am not sure that ‘corporate america’ is where I belong, but I have little choice given my skill set. I need to be working, but my options are limited (or limitless, depending on how you look at it).

I am looking for advice, networking, free or low cost continuing education, mentoring, good online job sites, anything that can jump-start me back into the IT/Computer industry.

Is there anyone out there that could take this 44 year old lady under their wing and help me get back into the flow?
