Explorer cant upen new windows

I've recently discovered that whenever I click a link in internet explorer that should open in a new screen it doesnt work.
The new internet explorer screen will open but the contents will stay the same as the window I linked from and will freeze (mousing over shows the hourglass symbol). All the buttons on the title bar etc of the new window will still work but the contents remains the same and the address bar stays clear.
I've tried hitting refresh, it does nothing. I dont have any anti popup software running.
I'm running windows xp.
please help!

what version of IE?
check for viruses, spyware, put on IE and XP latest service packs and critical updates...see if you have IE repair option in Start/Control Panel/Add remove programs/Internet Explorer 6...
TheChas makes frequent recommendation here to use Mozilla instead of Internet Explorer and personally i think TheChas is on to something.
IE can get very mucked up, altho if you are already running with latest ie version and sp's etc then probability of browser being problem goes down quite a bit so also look for simpler answer in flushing caches, running ad-aware ( virus, problem with internet hardware, cabling...
if you really want IE not Opera or Mozilla you can fix your IE probably by spending a few hours (smile) at and searching for your systoms there. browsing the results may give you clues to hone in on your particular problem(s).

Hi, thanks for responding. I'm using IE 6. I've checked and I dont have any adware/spyware/viruses. I've tried wiping caches, clearing cookies etc. Unfortunately, my add/remove programs doesnt list explorer so I cant add/remove/repair it. I had a look in microsoft and found 'Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 303472' which appears to describe my problem but doesn't really say how to fix it.
