explorer caused invalid page fault

By Daniel C. ·
Here is the scenario

compaq presario 5700T running Win98 SE:
Quicken 2002 was newly installed; the PC rebooted, and the following message came up at the beginning of windows: "explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.exe, etc". Once I hit close, I just get a blank screen with no further HD activity.

This occurs in safe mode as well. In other words, I can't get into windows at all.

I already replaced the following 3 files from another win98se machine: explorer.exe, wsock32.dll, and shdocvw.dll. Nothing worked.

In fact, I reinstalled win98se over the existing windows directory and the same thing happened. I restored from an older registry and it did not help either. I emptied my temp folder too. I wentto the MS knowledge base and found nothing useful.

Anyone has any ideas? I don't want to reformat the HD if at all possible. Your help is appreciated.

Look at Microsoft article Q237888 titled, "Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module Shell32.dll". Although your error mentioned the problem occurring in module explorer.exe, while this article refers to the error with shell32 and/or Kernel32.dll, I think that the cause and resolution may be similar.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q237888

(REMOVE SPACES from the pasted URL)

CAUSE:
This issue can occur if the [Boot] section of the System.ini file containsthe following line:

Shell=c:\compaq\cpqshell.exe

NOTE: The Cpqshell.exe file is incompatible with the Shell32.dll file that is included in Internet Explorer.

RESOLUTION:
To resolve the issue, change the Shell= line in the System.ini fileto Shell=explorer.exe.

To do this, use the following steps:

1. Click Start , point to Programs, point to Accessories , and then click Notepad.

2. On the File menu, click Open.

3. In the File name box, type c:\windows\system.ini, and then click Open.

4. Click Search, and then click Find .

5. In the Find what box, type shell=, and then click Find Next.

6.Type a semi-colon ( at the beginning of the Shell= line, and then create a new line.

7.On the new line, type shell=explorer.exe, click Save on the File menu.

8. Restart your computer. Click No if you receive the following prompt:

Your system shell has changed. The Compaq software will work with your new shell, but the new shell will not work with your Compaq software. Do you want to keep your Compaq software working?

----------

Substitute your "errored" file instead of the file referred to in this article, and apply the same fix.

And by the way, I just realized that you stated you can't get into Windows at all, so you'll have to boot up on a bootable floppy and edit the system.ini file in DOS.

I tried that and it did not help. I ended reformatting the HD and starting over. Thanks anyways.

Here is what you need to do. If you can install windows98se you need to install it in another directory. When installing windows and it asks the directory to install it in, type in a new directory name and it will load windows in a clean setting. You will however have to reinstall your other programs for them to run properly. Sounds like you got a nasty virus. You will also want to look and see what is in your autoexec.bat file. from the dos prompt you can say c:\edit autoexec.bat and seewhat is in your bat file. There may be something that is preventing it from loading windows properly.

I did not find any virus. If I had to re-install windows (which I really wish I didn't have to) in another directory, I might as well reformat the HD, which is what I did. Thanks anyways.

Here's another possibility. If you don't see anything suspicious in the system.ini file (As I referred to in answer number 1), consider this. See Microsoft article Q191609 titled, "Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module...".

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q191609

(REMOVE SPACES from the pasted URL.)

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS
When you start your Windows 98-based or Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

Explorer:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you then click Details , you may see the following information:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at memory address.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Microsoft Windows 95 version of the Explorer.exe file is located in the root folder of drive C.

Resolution:

Boot the computer to the Startup menu and then click Command Prompt Only. (Or boot on a DOS disk)

Type the following at the prompt:

ren c:\explorer.exe explorer.old

See the above link for the whole article.
