explorer caused invalid page fault

by daniel c. . Updated 24 years ago

Here is the scenario

compaq presario 5700T running Win98 SE:
Quicken 2002 was newly installed; the PC rebooted, and the following message came up at the beginning of windows: “explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.exe, etc”. Once I hit close, I just get a blank screen with no further HD activity.

This occurs in safe mode as well. In other words, I can’t get into windows at all.

I already replaced the following 3 files from another win98se machine: explorer.exe, wsock32.dll, and shdocvw.dll. Nothing worked.

In fact, I reinstalled win98se over the existing windows directory and the same thing happened. I restored from an older registry and it did not help either. I emptied my temp folder too. I wentto the MS knowledge base and found nothing useful.

Anyone has any ideas? I don’t want to reformat the HD if at all possible. Your help is appreciated.
