explorer, control panel etc ... not accessable

By luv2bike2 ·
Windows XP SP2 installed on computer.
when the user clicks on Explorer or contol panel, printers and faxes etc
they get an errror message saying about the Data Execution Prevention and it
will close, than the box comes up asking to send a report or not.
i can not get into none of the above programs.
their ISP is AT&T Yahoo i installed AT&T yahoo antivirus and spyware on the
system, ran both of them, i also installed spybot search and destroy and ran
it as well. there were 4 viruses on the system and the antivirus cleaned
them up, there was a ton of spyware on the system which i also cleaned it up.
i also did a system restore back to May 1, 2007 to see if i can get into the
above programs and still can not. it is a users home machine and rarely goes
into the above programs, however i was asked to look at the computer to clean
it up and see if i can make it go faster and what have you but i can't do any
of that.

besides basicly wiping out the hard and starting fresh does any one have a
clue as to why this is happening and what i can do to fix it. all of the MS
updates are installed.

Thanks a bunch!

Re: explorer, control panel etc ... not accessable

Go to, Start > settings > control panel > system > Advanced > settings > Data Execution Prevention, and make sure this is turned on.
I hope this helps you. Please post back if you have anymore problems.

Silly goose! They can't get to control panel.

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to Re: explorer, control pan ...

The original post SAYS they can't get into the control panel because DEP is preventing them from accessing it. Now, why would you go and suggest they go into it to fix the problem?

No, it sounds to me like the .CPL files, and possibly others, are either corrupt or still infected and DEP is blocking it/them from access.

Now, how to fix it?

Try this

by ctrservices In reply to explorer, control panel e ...

Click Start, and then click Run.
Type sfc, and then press ENTER.
Click Extract one file from installation disk (this does require you to have a copy of the original installation disk).
In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type C:\windows\control.exe.
Click Start, click Browse next to the Restore from box, and then locate the Windows installation files. By default, in the OEM version of Windows, installation files are on the hard disk in the C:\Cabs folder or C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS.
When you find the path to them, just click OK

Follow the same procedure again but this time in the system file to restore from box, type C:\Windows\rundll32.exe

Download a copy of rundll32.exe,
unzip to this location and overwrite the old one:
C:\Windows\ (or wherever it was located originally)

Reboot and try accessing Control Panel
