    Explorer Crash: Access Violation

    Locked

    by joseph_perez ·

The error listed below typically happens upon launching or exiting a
number of different applications. It doesn’t seem to make any
difference what application you’re launching or exiting (including most
of the MS Office 97 apps, GroupWIse, a terminal emulation package we
use, explorer, IE4 or 5, Netscape 4.x, Programmer’s File Editor, even
notepad sometimes!!), nor does it seem to matter which service pack you’re running (3, 4, 5, or 6). When it happens, you get the error dialog box listed
below, your systray icons are emptied, and whatever apps you have in
your startup group launch themselves over again. When you look in the
event viewer, one of the messages you see is from winlogon stating “The
shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.” Here’s the
    error message:

    explorer.exe
    Exception:access violation(0xc0000005, address: 0x30002182)

The error doesn’t seem to be fatal, but it’s extremely annoying in that
whatever explorer or “find” windows you might have had opened

I had this same exact problem. It showed up on two of my machines. It is
a problem with different level of IE modules on the machine. I fixed it
by scratching all traces if IE from both the hard drive and the registry and
      then reinstalled IE4.01

I have had this same error for a number of reasons. One was a sound card conflict, this was limited to games. Another, that sounds closer to yours was my Anti-Virus Program, in fact the program conflicted with other programs from the same manufacture. I’m not out to ruin any reputations, but the name was McAfee!

Your description is short; but the error message points to the following two possibilities; while the first one is the most likely one.

The information in this article applies to:

      – Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows NT 4.0- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows 98
      ——————————————————————————-

      SYMPTOMS
      ========

When you use the Microsoft Internet Explorer Open Software Description (OSD)
code download facility (that uses the Java Package Manager[JPM]) to permanently
install java class files onto a user’s computer, the user is presented with an
Security Warning dialog box for each signed cab file that is downloaded from the
Web server. When the user clicks Yes on the Security Warning dialog box for the
last cab file that is downloaded, the following error message may be displayed:

      An application error has occurred
and an application error log is being generated.

      IEXPLORE.exe
      Except
