Explorer Crashing All the Time

By BorgInva ·
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 Offset: 00012aeb

XP SP3

For the past few days out of the blue, Explorer will crash when copying files or even just highlighting them. SP3 was done weeks ago with many reboots and file copying since. Nothing has been changed on this computer.

Any info on this? Too little info?

Check this MS bulletin

I am not encountering any problems with Explorer in SP3. As you know, many folks experienced problems, apparently isolated to HP computers with AMD processors.

Hopefully the MS bulletin will guide you to a resolution. If not, you may have to do an SP2 reinstallation in repair mode, followed by reinstillation of SP3.

Theoretically, SP3 is just a rollup of SP2 patches, plus a few pieces of Vista functionality thrown in gratis.

Please post back in this thread if the glitch persists.

If the above doesn't work, try this

It may be a context menu handler issue. The above program will displat these (and more) the first suspect may be (if you have an Intel graphics card) igfxpph.dll or igfxhk.dll.
Uncheck a handler, check your system, check the handler (if unchecking did not stop the problem), rinse and repeat.
Once you find the culprit, Google the name so you can install a newer version.

Not Have Symantec

by BorgInva In reply to Addendum

I do not use Norton anymore. Stopped using them years ago for being so hogging and pricey, and that activation thing turned me away completely. But looking at the other links, I could not find anything relating to Explorer, but it could quite possibly be a SP3 problem... a couple of weeks after it has working fine. Strange...

In the meantime it wouldn't

hurt to try this.

Virus Removal
Restart the PC in Safe Mode and turn off System Restore. Run stng380.exe. When it is finished resart in Safe Mode again and run Spybot.

Download Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2 and install it. Update it. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Download Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/stinger.htm

Thanks for the suggestion but I am clean in every possible way. Never heard of Stinger though. Will keep this one in my records.
