Explorer Cuts Out

By Editor Perplexed ·
Internet Explorer keeps shutting down on my fairly new computer (Windows XP). I don't have a tech background so I don't know where to start to solve this problem. Before calling the software developers I thought I'd post a question here first. Thanks!

When, how long , and what is 'fairly new' ...

When does it shut down - when you are using it or when it is unattended?

How long can it remain open and running - does it always shut down after a set period of time?

What kind of computer (make and model) are we talking about here? How old is it?

Which OS are you running and which IE is this?

if at all possible

try to get malewarebytes, superantispyware, and a good antivirus (I personally use avastfree4home). If you can't get them downloaded onto your machine, see if you know someone who can download them and burn them to cd for you. Install, update then run. You may want to consider running a clean up utility first as well; ccleaner is a good one but if you're not computer savvy, don't touch the default settings.

This type of problem

by tintoman In reply to Explorer Cuts Out

is often caused by add-ons to internet explorer malfunctioning.
In many cases it can be fixed by resetting internet explorer to its original state.
In particular Skype and Google Toolbar have been culprits in the past.
If you want to try a reset go to Control Panel and double click "internet options" for XP or Vista
Click the Advanced tab and then click the "Reset" button.
Be aware though that if you have any user names or passwords for site access stored within internet explorer you are going to lose them by doing this.
