Explorer Errors when I click on "Start"

By mrfletchernz ·
Hi there,
My son was playing on the PC and something happened (of which he doesn't know what happened)
If you try to click on the Start button, an error appers saying that Explorer has caused an error in Kernel32.dll and sometimes an error in shlwapi.dll

I get the same thing if I click on my Windows Explorer shortcut on the desktop. I can get in using My Computer, but once in there can't get as far as C:\Windows\Start Menu without it crashing.
I've got Win Me, P3, 96mb ram

I have tryed deleting my win386.swp file - didn't make any difference. Try Windows Me system restore back to two different restore points and it came back and said "No chnages have been made"

I'm stuck and frustrated.

Can anyone please help.

Cheers

Mr Fletch

I'll assume that you don't happen to have another identical (nearly similar?) PC around, so trying to grab files out of the various Windoze directories and reloading manually is not going to be helpful.

Your very best bet is to try to copy as much of your relevant files onto some sort of backup medium as you can. Then drop in your WinME CD and re-install. If you have a "normal" WinME CD, you'll likely be OK as far as your data goes, although you may need to re-install some of your apps.

If you have an OEM Rebuild/Repair CD then it's sort of a "good news/bad news" story. The good news is this will absolutely fix the problem. The bad news is that you will lose all of your data, and will need to restore all of your apps and data.

2 things you can try. Make sure that your win386.swp file is NOT set to "read only." In Explorer, tools\folder options\view put a check mark in the "launch folder windows in a separate process" box.

If you do have an oem machine, put the cd in and restart. You should be able to start the machine in DOS mode. Change directory to c:\windows\options\cab and type setup<return>. This will restore the os and leave all data intact.
