Explorer freezing/not responding/lagging

By markkmh ·
When I right click on START, choose explorer, the window pops up, but suffers from the following:

Freezes, so I click close, it tells me it is not responding, so I click cancel and then I can get into explorer as normal. As say 'normal' but is is still slow, until I get into Programs - then it beahves normally.

i have XP SP 2, AVG, Adaware, Spybot, hijack this, ran all. Defragged etc. ran scan disk. But still no change.

In todays age I cannot afford to wait for 15 seconds to get into explorer - you know what I mean!! Any help would be gratefully appreciated. One other thing I did tinker with the Services under admin. I (as far as I am aware) restored all the services that i disabled. Please help....Mark

Try emptying the Temporary Internet Files folder.

If there are multiple users on the machine you will need to first: enable Hidden files and folders.

Go to the C:\Drive > Drill down through Documents and Settings > User Account > Local Settings > Temporary Internet Files > ContentIE.5

Delete everything including the index.dat file then defrag once more and everything should be fine.

Because you cannot delete the index.dat file of the currently logged on user you will need to log on with Administrator priveledges and do each account from there.

I'd say that will do the trick; if not then I'm very interested in learning what will. Hey, always open to learn something new.

Go back to your services on your computer. If you right click on any service and go to help, you will see a link for "default service settings". You can use this as a template to verify your settings in services.msc.

Also, if you tinkered with "add/remove windows components", you could have removed the indexing service. This will cause these kinds of problems as well.
