Explorer hangs when opening excel files

By gjonascu ·
When I attempt to open excel files using Windows Explorer the file hangs for 2 minutes then opens. But if I use Excel to browse to the file and it will open without a problem. I tried all the service packs and updates as well as reinstalling a clean copy of Office XP, but did not resolve the problem. Currently running WinXP Pro on a Latitude Laptop.

There are several variables here?
1. What version of Excel are you using?
2. Did you install Excel with our without Office? I've heard there are issues with Office 2000 and WinXP not working well with each other?
3. Does this happen with blank Excel files?
4. How much RAM does your laptop have?
5. What's the speed of your CPU (eg., 500 Mhz Pentium).

a few things to try...

1) ensure "findfast" and "office startup" is not in your startup

2) With all office programs closed. Click start -- run -- and type in excel.exe /regserver

That should resolve your issue.

Good luck.

try disabling your anti-virus software for a test to see if that is fighting for the file handle...and check out this article, you may need to update Windows XP and Office XP (i would, anyway), apparently there is issue with XP SP-1 and accessing files on windows 2k based network share (you don't mention if you are on a network, so maybe not appliable):
