    Explorer won’t connect to Internet.

    Locked

    by ds9 ·

In July we lost 7 machines to virus attacks.
We are now about finished rebuilding the system from scratch.

However we have a curious problem with two (2) of them, we cannot get Explorer to connect to Internet. (NT4.0 & SP6a).

Following Items have been double checked, and are O.K.:
All machines can talk to each other on our internal net work, network neighborhood and server manager SEE’s all machines.
    IP# correct on each.
    SubNet Mask correct on each.
    Gateway IP# correct on each.

The two machines are DNS servers, so we did not load IIS4 onto those 2 computers to make them less likely to get another virus. Which should not effect Explorer.

    Any Ideas Guys.?

    Regards
    George

How does your network connect to the internet? Through a firewall/proxy server? Make sure your servers can see the proxy and the proxy allows these servers to connect through it.

I know it sounds blatantly obvious but without any more details it’s difficult to say.

I agree that proxy settings are a likely culprit if you are using any form of proxy.

If not proxy, make sure the DNS is correct.

Just because the machines are DNS servers does NOT mean that your applications know it. You need at least one (two is better) DNS sever addresses in your tcp/ip properties. (Even if it the machine’s own IP address as the DNS server.)

      Things to check:
      1. Can you ping a numeric IP address on the internet from these machines? (If yes, you are actually getting out).
      2. Can you ping a name on the internet? (If yes above and no here, you definately have a DNS problem.)

      Good luck.

I don’t know why it worked, but I added a third DNS server to the other two already in the TCP/IP set up on both machines and it now works .???????????????

        Thank – George
