explorer.exe

By cliff680 ·
I have a Win 2k pro workstation gives me an explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the prog. error, shotly after login. Then the screen goes black and just sits there. I've tried logging in with different profiles (all the same results). I'm able to get in with Safe mode command prompt, but I can't run mmc.exe, takmgr.exe, nothing. I also ran ad-aware and mcafee and they didn't find anything. I tried hi-jack this, but got the error with that as well. Could I get rid of the default profile maybe??? I think it's something that's trying to load at startup that's killing it. Any idea please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

First off, if it gives you enough time, check the Event Viewer for clues. It sounds like a critical service is failing to initialize properly. The best method I've found in such cases is to start up, open Event Viewer, and clear all events before it fails. Then after the next restart the events recorded will be far fewer in number and more likely to be directly related to the problem. You could also start up with a bootlog file created for you which you can access from Safe Mode. Another option is to do a step-by-step load of drivers and services - it's tedious, but helpful to isolate the problem service or device.

I can't get into safe mode and I also don't have enough time to get into the event log, so I can't see what is failing. I think I might just cut my losses and reload the o/s.

I ended up reformatting the machine and dropping an image on it.
