Explorer.exe app error

By collins_ms ·
Running win98 and Upon bootup, I intermittently receive a explorer.exe app error. though the machine is functional, my apps in startup don't load. sometimes, I even get a blue screen which by select the enter key I can continue. It's very annoying!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

One way to do this would be to completely reload Win98, then all third party drivers and programs - one by one - to see which one starts this problem going. Or, you could go in reverse order by starting to uninstall things - First, start by removing any programs from your startup folder and any memory-resident programs or drivers that run on startup - like antivirus programs, Real player or other audio software - anything that shows up in your system tray. Also, check your other startup files- any autoexec, config and .ini files that may be running during your startup. If this occurs at times other than startup, I'd say the only thing to do is reinstall everything from scratch. Hope this helps.

I agree with the previous question, just thought I'd add to it. Rather than rebuild right away, go to start/run and run msconfig. Select the startup tab and uncheck all but the basic windows tasks. Reboot, all should be finie. Gradually re-introduce each task one by one. If you see anything you really don't require, remove the app using add remove programs. It's not uncommon for users to add silly programs from mags. If you need any more detailed instructions, feel free to email me.

Ron

One area that was missed. Check the Run and RunOnce areas in the registry. Those function the same as Startup. MY hunch is your problem lies there.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Run
RunOnce

What version of Win 98 are you running?

My experience has led me to believe that win98 first edition is very unstable and actually does that very thing regardless of how well built the system is.
