explorer.exe crashes

By kingtutman ·
Whenever I open a folder and am in it for a little while it crashes. This is the following error code I receive.

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

I have reinstalled XP professional over my existing XP professional hoping to fill in any gaps. Also I have ran Ad-aware SE, Spybot, and Vundo Fix. This problem started when I installed the software for my new Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus. Please help? I don't know alot about computers so please be patient with me.

Did you re-install SP2 and updates?

What type of drive is this? Internal/external, SATA/(P)ATA/USB/other? You actually did pretty well providing info, but more is better.

What other symptoms of the crash do you notice? Does everything totally freeze? Can you use keyboard or mouse? Does the screen re-draw? Do particular bits of the explorer window or desktop disappear? Is further info available from the error box?

What is the Maxtor software for? I doubt it is geometry translation. Is it for backup, or data transfer, or what specific drive utilities does it provide?

try: Start > Run > sfc /scannow
(type sfc /scannow in the run box)
report any errors, or let sfc fix them if it can.

Here is the closest thing to your problem I can find at microsoft:
Please post back with further info, read the entire MS article, tell us if you think it is relevant. I can help you if the article is confusing. If you decide you'd like to try editing your registry, follow the procedure carefully. I can try to advise you if you are unsure about it. You can also try searching MS yourself, or search the web.

Use SFC and make sure your XP is up to date before trying anything else.

Let me know what's up, good luck.
