Explorer.exe restarting by itself

By dave the IT guy ·
I have a laptop running W2K SP4 that is exhibiting the following. When you launch Windows Explorer it opens fine. As soon as an attempt is made to open "My Computer" to access mapped network drives, the application closes - the screen goes blank and then recreates the desktop. It appears that the Explorer.exe process is shutting down and then auto-restarting.

If you press Alt+Control+Delete, in the task manager, under Processes, how many explorer.exe are running when that happens?

A second instance of explorer.exe opens momementarily as the application is launched. It closes as the app finishes loading returning to just one instance of the process. As soon as an attempt is made to navigate outside of "My Documents", the app crashes, the original process disappears and then restarts

I have already replaced the explorer.exe file from a new cleanly installed machine, and have checked that it is not specific to the one user's profile.

I had a similar problem....have you tried turning off the "Indexing Service"?....it's a shot in the dark.

No luck - indexing service wasn't running. I turned it on, and checked and the problem still exists. I turned it back off and the problem still exists - thanks for your comments

There are 2 options that you mau try out.

1. Run SFC /SCANNOW.

If that doesn't help, try to perform a cleanboot troubleshooter to identify any application causing the problem.

2. Cleanboot,

This should help.
