External CD-ROM for Laptop...

By cyberghost_1 ·
I need some advice on what Harware to buy for adding an External CD-ROM to a Laptop. The laptop is Generic, but Toshiba LOOK-ALIKE/BASED.

WinME, 256MB RAM, 30.0GB HDD, DVD/CD-R/RW Combo Drive. What I need is the Ext. Drive to burn CD's for a Business.

What is recommended, that isn't too expensive and that can be used by an inexperienced person...(NEWBIE)

Thanks, ASAP Please

Why are you getting an external CD-RW for?
You stated that the laptop has a Cd-RW.

Here is a different option.
Buy a 1 GB USB thumb drive( memory stick )
then burn the CDs from a PC with a good DVD/CD burner.

Good Luck

Thanks...I had to go with the External drive...it was faster than copying the image and using the single onboard drive..

Assume you want to copy from external CD-ROM to internal burner. Since it's an Me machine, assume it has USB 1.1. If so, transfer rate will likely be too slow to copy a CD from an external drive.

Just use internal burner to copy. All major burning software will copy to an image file on hard disk and then burn to CD-R/RW media. Two drives are not necessary.

this was for a client of mine that knows nothing of using PC?s...I tried showing him to copy the image of the disk he wanted to burn onto the HDD...then burning it onto the CD-R/RW media. He said it was too complicated, I don?t see how, I installed Nero..which is pretty basic...none the less it was easier and faster with the external drive...thanks

If the laptop has a usb port there are several makers of CD's, CDRW's, DVD's, or DVDRW that run on usb or firewire even.

Plextor, Iomega, HP, Sony, Yahama to name a few.

If you do not have usb ports but have a pcmcia slot you can add ports through a pcmcia/usb card.

Good Luck Lee
