External Drive Not Working

by toxicwaster . Updated 19 years ago

Ok i have this extremely irritating problem with an external usb hard drive.
It was working fine on my windows XP laptop up until a few days ago, it just stopped working and now everytime i plug it in windows decideds to lock up, i hear the usual noise that windows recognises it is plugged in, but if i try to see it in device manager or disk management windows locks up until i unplug it.

The strange thing is, i got a Linux LiveCD just to test out linux and the hard drive works fine, tried a few different distributions of linux and the drive works fine with all!!

This needs to be solved as i dont want to have to use linux just to access my drive! Everytime i boot up windows with the drive plugged in it wont even get up to the log in screen unless i unplug it.

This is a real pickler, any help is greatly appreciated
