external hard disk

By amedinad83 ·
hello every body, i have this problem, i bought an external hard disk, that i connect to my computer at home by an usb/cable, but i can not put any file of more than 4gb on the hard disk, i can save files of 1gb but when i try to save files of more than 4gb, one window appear and said there is not space in the hard disk, maybe is due to the fact that i am using an usb/cable to connect my hard disk to my computer, maybe with a serial data/cable i would be able to saved more than 4gb, anyway i would appreciate that somebody give me an advice for my problem, thanks.

How much space is left?

Check to see how much space is left. If you bought it second hand, there might some junk on it.

Is the drive formatted to use FAT32 file system?

by matt.pott In reply to external hard disk

Is the hard drive formatted with the FAT32 file system? If this is the case, it would explain the 4GB file size limit.

Try moving all the files somewhere safe and reformatting it using the NTFS file system.

This can be done from windows xp by going to my computer, right clicking on the drive icon, and selecting format.

I know its a bit late to reply to your post, but my answer may help someone that comes accross this through google as i did.
