External hard disk not readable

I got 80 GB toshiba hard disk. It has got two partitions and getting detected by the system after a long time(15-20 min).I can see the disk drive as healthy in my computer-manage-disk management. Both partition drives are displayed in that. But i am not able to explore the drives. Could you please help me. All my documents are in this system and there is no back up. I am running chkdsk now and it has finished only 4%. most of the record segment are displayed as unreadable.is this a physical problem or data corruption.pls,pls,pls, reply

what does it say in Disk Management ?
check properties of the drive, make sure 'write caching' is disabled, turn off autoplay, make sure files were not encrypted
you may need to take ownership of the files
see if that helps
if all else fails (USB dead) you can try slaving on another PC and recover files that way
