Well depending on what happened here

There are several possibilities, the first is that if it was not properly Dismounted the Partition Tables could have been damaged. You Always need to use the Safely Remove Option Under Windows and not just turn off the External HDD or Computer.

If it was connected when the HDD on the Computer was formatted it is possible that some damage was done then but it is much more likely that the drive has not been shut down properly.

Now assuming that the drive is not readable under any XP System and that there was no need to install any Drivers for Software that may be in use on the drive like True Crypt or something like that and that the drive is just not showing as Formatted you could try throwing a Data Recovery Application at the drive to recover the Data. Seagate Recommend i356 for this purpose but then again they also sell that product.

Here is a short list of other Data Recovery Applications that may offer a better outcome.

While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered foe use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application.

Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members.

Additional one

I like the Ontrack option, however I also like using Active Undelete (http://www.active-undelete.com/) for projects like this, it has a decent price, and also does extremely well (sometimes it will recover things Ontrack's software won't). Just another suggestion
