external hard drive no longer works after plugging into vista laptop

I have a western digital 160gb usb external hard drive(gets power from usb) that I’ve been using for a while on my xp tower computer. I just got a new laptop with vista, plugged the external hd into the laptop, and it started clicking, and now it won’t work on the xp tower either.
is there any way to get it working again? i’d seen similar topics which made me think it just couldn’t get enough power from the laptop usb, but that wouldn’t completely screw up the hd, would it?
other topics mentioned taking an external out of the case and using it internally, but does this work for ones designed as external, or only internal harddrives in an external shell?

I hadn’t seen a topic where someone couldn’t get it to work on a computer it had before, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
