External Harddrives

By abee_here ·
I had purchased a maxtor external harddrive in Nov 2005. It has now conked off. I have loads of data on the drive, which I would not like to lose. What do I do next?

Can this be fixed at home? I have some knowledge of assembling PC's.

Typically it is just an IDE drive in a housing, which can be removed in case the USB controller/connection is the problem.

What are the symptoms?

Can you hear the drive spinning? Any unusual noises (ie Screeeeeeeeee, ker-chunk, ker chunk, ker-chunk, sound of motor slowing down/speeding up)
