External HD Issue

By saadarif ·

I have a 320 GB external HD and its been working absolutely fine ever since i bought it. yesterday i tried to shrink around 2GB from the last partition using Vista Disk managament. After shrinking, i disconnected the HD from Vista without formatting and connected to my XP laptop to format it there. but when i connected it and tried to format using disk management on XP, i got an error like 'disk manager failed. restart again...' after that i see my HD size incorrect and all my last partition seems like free space and also i see another 1415GB free space which is incorrect. i guess sector/clustor information got corrupted. but the problem increased today. when i connected this morning, i dont see my HD at all in my computer/explorer/disk management. i do see it in device manager and 'safely remove hardware'. Can anyone help please? its full of my important data. do tell me if u need more info...

The toll Test Disk has helped me out several times. It reads the partion info and restores the tables if necessary. It's beenm a while since I used it so be sure to read the documentation.

Let me know how you make out.
