External HDD Problem

By kedia990 ·

I recently purchased a Seagate 160GB Hard Drive (not sata) with a Gemini External HDD Enclosure. Drive installed fine, i formatted it and began to use it. Then i removed the hard drive. But the next time i tried to switch on the computer, the MoBo wouldn't perform POST (no beep). I turned it off, connected the external drive, and voila! it started. So basically my computer does not start up without the external hard drive. I have:
(a) Seagate 80GB (not SATA) on Primary Master
(b) DVD -RW on Secondary Slave
(c) Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9 mobo
Can anyone please suggest how to fix the problem? Thanx in advance..

An external hard drive should not affect POST at all. My first suggestion would be try to power on your computer without the external hard drive connected again and see if it will POST.

An external hard drive could affect boot (after POST) depending on the BIOS configuration.

What kind of external hard drive interface? USB 2.0? FireWire?

Is your BIOS configured to attempt to boot from an external hard drive?

What operating system are you running?

the external hdd is affecting POST... without the external hdd connected, the motherboard wont POST.

Interface is USB 2.0

BIOS is configured to boot from Primary Master.

Running Windows XP Professional SP2

At the startup, enter the PC setup, there might be an option there that says something like "reset settings"... its location changes depends what Brand of BIOS you have.
