External IP communication

By Numbies ·
I am in the unenviable position of having been dumped with our network administration! Our internal network is fine, but some users require FTP services from outside our network and cannot access these sites. They say they have been able to connect last week.

We have a random set of internal IP addresses connected to our ISP via our Mailserver (with Proxy Server etc.) having a second card with a valid Internet address.

As far as I know, nothing has been changed on the server from the timeit was working until now???

Thanks for any ideas.

Be sure you've got all the latest service packs (if you work with WinNT 4 or W2K).

I had a simular problem with access97 and FTP on a web browser, i've updated WinNT4 with SP6 and OFF97SR2 + borland datadase engine and evrything was working fineagain.

OK Check to see if in your proxy server's configuration if you allow them access to FTP sites. If so, I would try stopping the Proxy and restarting it.

Check back resolving on your external NIC
(use NSLOOKUP and enter you external NIC's IP)

Some FTP servers will not allow users without back resolving.

Find out if you have a proxy server.. if so, goto the winsock proxy service, and if it's hung, stop and restart the service.. make sure that the users have the correct permissions for FTP.

If your proxy server is in a different domain, make sure the trust relationship is still established.

hope that helps.
