By dmccabe ·
I have a machine dual booting win98 and WINNT 4, external modem (3COM US Robotics) works fine in win98 but I cant set it up in WINNT 4, inserted the modem driver disk, it seems to be doing something as it shows a status bar then disappears and then prompts me to insert WINNT 4 disk into drive A: but doesnt give me the option to browse for any other dirves!! any ideas??

You will need to loiad the driver for the modem that will support WINNT,it is asking for the disk to search for the driver.Either go to the modem manufacturer web site to get driver or www.windrivers.com and www.driverforum.com to locate driver for winnt.

Get the updated .INF file from the 3Com/USR web site. Then, in the Modem tab of Control Panel, choose Add, and when presented with a list of modem brands, choose the button "Have Disk", then point to the place where you saved the .INF file. Have about 16 modens of these here, all working in NT.
Any other questin, feel free to ask.

I have had a similar incident with an internal modem. what finally worked seems not to make sense or unnecessary but ...
i had to go to the network neighborhood and delete everything: protocols, loopback adapter , and services. also remove any modems installed.
then reboot, because you have to for a sucessful installation.
when you log back in, find the executable in the NT section of the driver disk and RUN it.
you should be prompted to set up the network after the modem is installed. if not go to network neighborhood and do so. have your nt disk ready.
remember to add Remote Access Service (RAS)
and the loopback adapter.
check to see how many com ports exist in control panel/ ports. if you have none you will need to install com 1, 2, 3, or 4.
when all is (hopefully) working, run service pack 6 to update all of the files.
wish you well !
