EXTERNAL SCSI DEVICE DISAPPEARING

By p.fascia ·
HI, I have a client W2000 PRO Ita SP2 with an adaptec 2920a and two external device connected, an Iomega 1 Gb jazz (scsi number 4) and a Fujitsu Dynamo 640 SE, magneto optical drive, able to read and write optical floppy of 640 an below (scsi number3). First they work perfectly, but sometimes they vanished from the computer, and if somebody click on the icon of the drive it says or "semaphore period expired", or sometimes "device not connected". Sometimes a reboot is able to revive them, sometimes only to turn off the machine, and sometimes neither that.
Any ideas?
Thank You for the attention

Have you checked for a virus? A loose or bad connection? Another problem would be too many applications being open when the device is being accessed and there isn't enough memory...

Make sure the user is turning on the external devices prior to turning on the computer. If the externals don't id to the scsi card at boot, you will not be able to see them. Check the scsi card during the boot up process to see if they are being correctly identified. If they are and are still flaky in the opsys, chk for proper termination or use shorter cables on the externals. Hope this helps,

Vickie

Always done so, they are detected immediately before w2000 starts, and the cable are less than 1m... sorry, thank You for the answer

This sounds like a timing issue with the SCSI bus. Since you say that they work sometimes, then not at other times, it appears that the SCSI adapter is not receiving a response from the Jazz or MO device when it requests its status. The adapter then resets itself, and loses connection with your devices. Since it happens to both devices, it is obviously not the devices. I just had a similar problem happen to me on an RS/6000 Unix server. REPLACE the following, one at a time until the problem goes away: a) terminator; b) scsi cable. Chances are you will find that either the terminator or the cable (or both) was the problem since the adapter is obviously working. New terminator and cable fixed my problem.
