External USB 120Gb Samsung drive – recognised but no drive letter

by dalchina . Updated 19 years, 4 months ago

Hi, I’ve just bought a Samsung HM120JC drive, 120Gb, 5400rpm. It’s in a case I’ve just been using which had a 60Gb drive in it.

Problem- the New Hardware Found Wizard opens (to my surprise) and completes, but no drive letter is assigned.

XP PRO – latest as of Jan 07.

When I plug the new drive in, the new hardware wizard opens, and asks to install something. It installs a USB-IDE bridge and USBSTOR.SYS.

Until I tried this drive, I could plug in USB drives I’d had for a while with no problems. Now the new hardware found wizard always appears when I plug in any of the drives.

The new drive is listed correctly but as a single entry from ‘Safely remove new hardware’ in the system tray.

However it is only listed as a ‘USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE’ in Device Manager.

Any ideas welcome…

Thanks, David Lawrie
